ProjectsMy most
recent endeavor has been scoring for visual media. This field of music
refers to music that has been composed, arranged, and/or selected
specifically for some kind of visual media including but not limited to
film, T.V. shows, commercials, video games, and artwork. My
introduction to this field was writting the score for the thesis film
of a master's student in the filmmaking department of UNCG. I was
immediately intrigued by the process of watching and composing
simultaneously. Music and filmmaking are both storytelling traditions
and are close relatives as a result. Growing up in a hispanic culture I
was surrounded by storytelling, I was enraptured by it. Composing for
visual media allows me to be a storyteller on two levels: one as a
composer and two as a member of the filmmaking process.
I was quick to discover
however, that it is not easy to find a filmmaker with a budget for
original music or a completed and unscored film. In order to garner
practice in this unique skill, I turned to silent films as it is simple
to remove any music if any, and insert your own. In a recent project I composed a score for the 1902 French silent film Le Voyage Dans La Lune, (A Trip To The Moon) by Georges Méliès. The score was written for a reed quintet called Quintet Sirocco
(oboe, clarinet, saxophones, basson, bass clarinet). I conducted the
quintet while the silent film was shown in front of a live audience. As
part of the same project, I wrote a jazz big band chart for a montage
scene from the hit show Breaking Bad. I
am currently working with Quintet Sirocco on future projects of this
nature. Samples of my work can be heard and seen on the Music/Videos
page.
